This book was provided by the publisher (via NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion or the content of my review.

I wanted to read this book since Nov 2017 and I was so happy when the publisher approved my review request. I went into this book not knowing much of what it was about, all I knew was I wanted to read it.

The story follows Alice and her mother Ella who are always moving because bad luck keeps following them everywhere. After the death of her grandmother, Althea Proserpine (who is a famous but elusive writer), the mother and daughter think the dangers are done. That bad luck will follow them no more. This leads them to settle down in one place and the story kicks off when Alice’s mother is kidnapped. Alice with the help of Finch sets out to rescue her mother from the Hinterland.

I have said this before, I am always delighted and pleasantly surprised when a debut novel gets a 4 or 5-star rating. Albert does such an amazing job with The Hazel Wood. I don’t really where to start.

The writing, like I mentioned, was beautiful. I don’t usually enjoy flowery writing, but this book changed that for me. I loved the stories from The Tales Of The Hinterland. They were so creepy and so real – no happy endings. Because not every story gets one. I want an entire book of just those.

“Look until the leaves turn red, sew the worlds up with thread. If your journey’s left undone, fear the rising of the sun.”

I went from disliking to loving Alice over the course of the book. In the start, I wasn’t sure why she was the way she was because no explanations were given. However, towards the end, things started to fall into place and my feelings for Alice changed too.

Finch was another character I liked. But, unfortunately, he wasn’t as well developed as I would have liked him to be. If he was, I would have loved him. Though I did love his library. Can I have that for myself?

However, the book was slow. The book didn’t deliver what it promised until the second half. A lot of people might give up on the book rather than wait so long. Or they may not enjoy the book as much. Which is another reason I gave it only 4 stars. Overall, however, if you want to read a creative creepy story about fairytales, then pick this book up.

“My love he wooed me
My love he slew me
My love he buried my bones
His love he married
His love I buried
My love now wanders alone

Also, can we please talk about the cover? It’s so BEAUTIFUL! The details and the colors, man I want to frame that on my wall. I really love black covers and The Hazel Wood cover is on the top 10 list of book covers I love.

Have you read it? Do you want to read it?

Do you like to read fairytale retellings? Which one is your favorite?

Mine so far is The Language Of Thorns
