Release Day: 6th February 2018

Synopsis: Jack is a walking fossil. The only human among a sea of clones. It’s been hundreds of years since humanity died off in the slow plague, leaving the clones behind to carry on human existence. Over time they’ve perfected their genes, moving further away from the imperfections of humanity. But if they really are perfect, why did they create Jack?
While Jack longs for acceptance, Althea-310 struggles with the feeling that she’s different from her sisters. Her fascination with Jack doesn’t help. As Althea and Jack’s connection grows stronger, so does the threat to their lives. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?

Honestly, I am not a big fan of dystopian, sci-fi stories. Don’t misunderstand me, I love The Hunger Games but I got tired of reading dystopian books. After a while, every story started to blend together. So, it won’t come as a surprise that I was skeptical going into this book. You might ask, Sush if you don’t like dystopia why did you pick this book up. For a tour no less. For that, I will say, because the synopsis caught my attention. It was different than anything I had read before and I really wanted to read about this world. And, obviously, I was not disappointed.
I loved the world building Finlay did with this book. The story is set in Vispera, home to a group of clones since 300 years after human life as we know it died due to a plague. However, before the humans died they perfected the science of cloning in the hopes that some part of them would live on. This story is about Althea 310 and Jack.
The book starts off slow because the author takes her time to build the world and set the tone. However, I did appreciate the slow start. Most times, it takes a long time to figure out the details in a sci-fi world but I didn’t struggle at all with this book.
As the plot progresses, the pace picks up and so does the action. Basically, when Jack is introduced into the world that Althea 310 is in, the conflicts start because of how different he is. The book is character driven, which works well since both Jack and Althea have different mindsets. I do not want to give too much away, but I will say this is one of my new favorite dystopian novels.
I wish Finlay would write more books in this world because I really want to read more.
